The Cherry Head Red-Footed Tortoise (Geochelone carbonaria) is a species of tortoise native to South America, particularly found in the Amazon Basin. Their shells typically range in color from dark brown to black, with a distinctive red or orange hue on their head and limbs, hence the name "Cherry Head". The shell is typically domed and may have slight indentations as they age. They generally grow to be around 10 to 14 inches in length, with males typically being slightly larger than females.
Cherry Head Red-Footed Tortoises are known for their calm and gentle nature, making them suitable pets for beginners. They often display curiosity towards their environment and may explore their surroundings when provided with ample space. While not as social as some other reptiles, they can recognize their keepers and may interact with them to some extent.
With proper care, Cherry Head Red-Footed Tortoises can live for several decades, with some individuals living up to 50 years or more.
